Episode Summary
Our hero Hard Gay gets it in his head that he wants to see whether or not the youth of today are grateful to their fathers or not. So, he goes out on Father's Day and does what he calls a survey. It pretty much consists of him going around Shibuya and telling kids that they should be grateful to their fathers, and ends on him going into someone's house to make sure she says thanks to her father, among other hilarious things.
Translator's Notes
One of the first things to take note of is when HG makes his entrance on the screen. He is kind of singing a tune, then busts out with a hoooo! and a few lyrics here and there. What he is actually doing is playing off of a song by Morning Musume called Happy Summer Wedding which lyrics begin with "Tousan Kaasan Arigatou" (Dad, Mom, Thanks). He just twisted the lyrics about to work for this here episode. Another thing to look at in the beginning, and this isn't really a translator's note, but check out all the kids in the background taking pictures with their cell phones.
For those of you who don't know what Print Club is, there is an excellent wikipedia entry on it here. For those of you who don't want to go there, it's the equivalent of a photobooth, and pretty much you go in there with friends and take pictures of yourselves, then add stationary around it and crap. The pictures come out and they have sticky backsides so you can put them on phones and things.
At one point HG gets down on his back and shouts out, "High Catch! Hard Gay from below!" Sadly, the pop culture reference here isn't known, but it would be much appreciated if someone knew to fill in this blank as it would most likely make this more funny than it already is.
Next up is the penis extinguisher. While literally he did just say fire extinguisher, (the phrase being chinka katsudou in Japanese), he was also referring to his penis, (the word for penis being chinchin). He was just making a pun, which is true for the next case.
After he puts out the cigarette with his penis extinguisher he pulls out his "Hard Gay Cell". Sadly what he said can't be as funny of a pun in English, at least that was what we thought, but we can explain further what he said here. In Japanese he said, "Hard Gaytai". The "Gaytai" part is HG making a pun on the word "Keitai", which means cell phone. He simply voiced the 'k' sound and turned it into "Gaytai".
Later on he goes back to that girl's house with her and when he gets there he says something about it being a shared-use building. That's as close a translation as could be made. The Japanese is "zakkyo biru", which literally translates to, "building containing a number of businesses, shops, and residences". We don't really have those everywhere in America except for the major cities, but they do exist, although there is no special term for them that I am aware of.
For those who didn't understand what HG was talking about when he told the grandmother that "This is the Japan of today", he was referring to himself and saying that Japan today is full of people like him. That's all that meant.
Also, when the girl gives her father a handkerchief for Father's Day, some people may think that was an odd gift, but they're actually very useful in Japan as most public bathrooms don't have paper towels to dry your hands with. Handkerchiefs come in real handy when there are no paper towels and things.
